What to Expect from COP27?
Paris Agreement’s ratifiers are heading to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt to attend COP 27 that will take place from 6-18 November 2022. Conference of Parties or COP is the supreme decision-making body of Paris Agreement where all states (193 countries plus European Union) review the implementation of the covenant.
There are three major agendas will be discussed at COP27.
Parties seek to:
1. Accelerate global climate action through emissions reduction
2. Scaled-up adaptation efforts
3. Enhanced flows of appropriate finance
Parties must unite to limit global warming to well below 2° Celsius and work hard to keep the 1,5° Celsius target alive.
The way is by increasing ambition through stronger GHG reduction targets, including by activating potential actions by cities and local governments.
COP27 should also witness enhanced global agenda for action on adaptation.
It is essential to make significant progress on the crucial issue of climate finance.
Progress on delivery of the annual US$100 billion will build more trust between developed and developing countries, showing that actual commitments are being fulfilled.
"Just transition" remains a priority for developing countries worldwide.
"I deeply believe that COP27 is an opportunity to showcase unity against an existential threat that we can only overcome through concerted action and effective implementation” - President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
