CRIC partners' plans to visit CRIC pilot cities were finally realized between 19-28 February 2023 two months after Indonesian Government eased COVID-19 restrictions on 30 December 2022.
Climate Resilient and Inclusive Cities (CRIC) is a 5-year initiative implemented by UCLG ASPAC with its partner organizations (Pilot4Dev, Universite Gustave Eiffel, ACR+, ECOLISE, and AIILSG) with support from the European Union.
CRIC assists local governments in technical support, which aims to strengthen the capacity of local governments to build cities' resilience to the impacts of climate change. CRIC is being implemented in 10 (ten) target cities and has been going on since 2020.
To achieve its goals, CRIC is built on three pillars, namely: (i) knowledge production and exchange; (ii) climate action plan; and (iii) capacity building and communication. One of the activities in the first pillar is the development of urban analysis reports, which have been completed in 2020 for all target cities through literature reviews and online discussions. The reports also contain priority issues and policy recommendations.
Other activity in the same pillar is a follow-up to the analysis, where each city selects one issue to be studied further to develop a solution to overcome the challenges. This activity started immediately after the completion of urban analysis through online FGDs.
Visits to Pilot Cities
The next step was supposed to be a visit to target cities to understand the detail about the challenges and opportunities. However, the visits were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 hindered the project significantly, as CRIC Partners in Europe and South Asia were unable to travel during the COVID-19 period.
Post COVID-19, CRIC Project again started to coordinate with partners as the travel restriction has been lifted and finally could organized these visits to CRIC pilot cities this year between 19-28 February 2023.
With these visits, CRIC Partners seek to understand the challenges and opportunities related to the selected issues of respective cities; which are: waste management, early warning systems, water management, water supply, and sanitation.
The CRIC partners will be accompanied by field officers and the CRIC management team. During the visits, the team will meet relevant agencies and parties from city officials, universities, and non-governmental organizations.
The team will also visit some relevant sites that can complement the team's understanding on the issues to obtain a comprehensive picture of the problems and opportunities related to the select issues.
